Cycling around Mull. A Guide by Luxury Self Catering Mull

Posted August 28, 2019

There are opportunities for cyclists of all abilities and disciplines throughout the Isle of Mull. For the keen road-cyclist there are several possible circuits around Mull, all taking in wonderful views and challenging climbs. A popular route, in either direction is Salen to Dervaig and then on to Tobermory before eventually returning to Salen. It’s a good half-day ride fro the experienced cyclist. There are some major climbs and twisting descents along the way too.

A longer circular ride is from Salen to Dervaig via Loch Na Keal and Calgary, then on to Tobermory and back to Salen. Again, its a challenging ride, with rewards in terms of both achievement and scenery.

For people with children or those just wishing to take things a little easier, there are several forest tracks to enjoy. More suited to mountain bikes than road bikes, the forests offer quiet routes through both plantations and deciduous woodland. Its a great way to explore and see wildlife along the way, or even to have a picnic and some solitude. Non of the forests are huge and routes can be linked between areas via the roads on the island. Taking a map along is always a good idea.

The most useful maps of Mull are:

  • Ordnance Survey Explorer maps: 373, 374 and 375.
  • Nicolson Maps: Oban & Mull.

The majority of roads around Mull are single track with passing places. They’re often narrow and have blind bends. Be visible, let other vehicles past at passing places and choose routes that are appropriate to your experience and age group.
